The biggest issue I have with modern games is not the games themselves. It’s the time we live in. Social media has flushed us with so much information about so many games. Most of my gaming experience is simply “I want to beat this game.” It’s not immersion but just to know what it’s about and having finished it so I can get to the next game on an almost endless list. When I was a kid or teen, I had less choices and also less media telling me about all my options, so I focused in on the 6-7 games I got each year from holidays or through borrowing from a friend. I missed out on 90% of games that came out, but I didn’t have the same level of FOMO, because it wasn’t in my face daily about what else is out there I haven’t got to yet.

Max Payne, and Scarface, gems of a time when DEI wasn't turning games into piles of 💩. I replayed this one on the PS5 recently. Runs pretty well.

The industry will follow the trends. Nintendo already is. We will be flooded with remakes and remasters for the next 10 years. AAA games will mostly vanish accept with Sony and Xbox will be all live service and game pass.

I somehow always held on to the games from my childhood that had significance. I sold off my gamecube, ps2 and xbox collections but held on to my N64 that my grandparents bought me for my 10th birthday. I have my original gameboy from 1993, and even when I sold my PS2 I kept a few games for some reason. Glad I did.

Played this not long after it got released on PC, I was spooked by the game at first, playing it as a child, but I got into the atmosphere so hard, My dad also played it a lot. and I replayed so much that I know where every enemy is, same with Max Payne 2 and Max Payne 3. Can't really say if I have a favorite Max Payne game, every game is has it's place in the era they came from, and they fit perfectly then and there, Max Payne 1 have this. almost. sentient feeling that you can smell and taste the air in each place, with the early 00s atmosphere by just looking at the environments.

I totally feel the same. I was actually thinking about this the other day while in the shower. I thought about how back in the day, you really didn't know what type of game you were going to get when buying them. Sure, we had magazines and early forums to discuss it but it was a surprise and the majority of the time, original ideas. These days, yes the graphical ability of video games have advanced exponentially, thr majority are copying each others concept and while I don't mind developers taking inspiration from other games, when you do it excessively like today's market has done, nothing becomes exciting to play. Nothing feels like a surprise anymore. Even when trying to avoid the internet and spoilers for a new release, you kinda already know what to expect. "It will have a cover system like X game, an inventory system like Y game and a story like Z game." We don't have any innovation anymore and it seems like indie developers are taking that torch to make original ideas that triple A devs won't do anymore but it doesn't benefit us older gamers because indie is always small scale. People talk bad about CyberPunk but at least they took some chances. Tried something different and it was demonized because of it, obviously because of quality issues. It scares studios to take risks and they stick to what makes money. I miss the old days...

If someone is just hoarding a bunch of games that they never intend to play, then they are doing it wrong, and it's part of what made the retro game scene get so out of hand. Buy what you actually have an interest in. If it sucks and you don't get rid of it, then that's different. You didn't buy it intending to just throw it on a shelf. You gave it a chance. Us old retro collectors (for the most part) amassed our collections over the course of years and decades simply by just buying what we actually have an interest in. Being a player first is most important, and that translates into being a collector. People who buy anything and everything just to show off aren't collelctors. They're hoarders, and they ruin it for the real gamers and collectors.

Theres a few reasons why older games are more desirable such as new systems are garbage and newer gamers want to play older games. Im happy to say i have about 2000 physical games mostly older games like 360 and ps3 :)

Yeah, Physical games that are BC with no digital skyrocketed in price. Fear and 50 cent both jumped to dumb prices. Fear being only $5 for most of it's life. If anyone sees this, RIGHT NOW June 19, 2024 Tornado Outbreak is only 4.99 digital. It's a different fun little arcade game, and it's steadily raised in value over the years to around 70 usd ATM.

Games went astray when they jumped from a subculture into being fully pop culture. I feel like games now don't respect your time - open-world games used to be few and far between and would be reserved for stuff like Elder Scrolls or GTA where the open nature of it was a core part of the experience. Now, games are padded with open-world-style stuff just to artificially inflate the playtime. I feel like for casual players, the "go anywhere, do anything" talk became the main appeal of games - anything outside of that is viewed as outdated and quaint. Would love to see a return to shorter games - all killer, no filler - as well as quirkier experimental efforts.

Dragon quest 1 2 3 remakes. The new rpg Fantasian from the creator of final fantasy. Metroid prime 4. Mario + Luigi brothership. Donkey kong country hd . phantom brave . Zelda . romancing saga 2 remake . too much money i need to spend now.

ALWAYS loved Jak 2 & 3 (also Jak X actually, and Daxter on PSP was something else for the time on Handheld 😁) as a kid coming off of Crash & Spyro on PS1 and Jak 1. Still to this day the Jak Series is still one of my friend and I's favourite franchises ever... It's also still PEAK Naughty Dog imo like Uncharted and TLoU are great and all but they're so "been there, done that" compared to Jak in terms of the Art Direction/Characters/Lore/Music, just EVERYTHING 👍

The Danganronpa one would be interesting if it was Danganronpa lol no Monokuma no party.

The new Zelda reminds me of the early 2000s especially with the special edition gold Zelda switch, it's like the Gameboy advance sp Zelda one. I don't have a switch but I like the new game from the trailer, since my last favourite Zelda was a links awakening on switch. Wasn't huge on botw or totk.
